Lock of Love in Delfshaven

A monument to love is to be erected in Delfshaven. The artwork is called “Lock of Love.” It is an iron fence to which amorous couples can attach a lock with their names engraved in it. After attaching the lock to the fence, the key will be thrown in the water. As long as the lock is tied to the fence their love will continue.
The idea is originally from Hungary, where a similar fence stands in a town called Székesfehérvár.
I can’t seem to figure out if this is piece of art is shoddy or not… Not to mention what it will look like? In Holland we have a saying: “Oude liefde roest niet” (Love won’t rust), but will this go for locks that represent the love for one another? And throw away the key in the water? Maybe it’s better if the lovers use combination locks. No keys need to be thrown away and they don’t need a hacksaw to remove the lock if, by chance, their love did become rusty.
Initiator Renate Rakolcai is still looking for an artist who wants to make the fence. Interested parties can send her their ideas as a draft proposal before September 1, 2009.
